And when he conveyed the warning and cautioned against the great matters, and did not neglect to indicate the minor ones, these verses were directed at the obstinate among the disbelievers. He had repeated that these admonitions are only for the believers. He spoke to them, turning away from others, as their ears had inclined to the eloquence of these admonitions, and their hearts had awakened to the majesty of these warnings. This is in reference to the reading of the majority, to the delight in conversing with singularity and distancing from the entrances of obstinacy: ﴿O My servants﴾, thus honoring them with the addition. However, when he indicated with the tool of distance that among them are those who have not firmly established themselves, he affirmed this by saying: ﴿those who have believed﴾ [meaning:] even if belief is with the tongue along with the slightest branch from the heart.

And when this [sura] was revealed in Mecca, and they were belittling worship there out of fear of the disbelievers, and the migration to family and homelands was severe, he emphasized to alert them that the state of one who leaves migration is like one who thinks that the earth is narrow: ﴿Indeed, My earth is vast﴾, meaning: in essence, provision, and all that you desire of comfort. If you cannot establish yourselves because of these obstinate ones who tempt you in your religion and prevent you from sincerity [to] Me in your land and striving in My worship until faith becomes a description for you, then migrate to a land where you can establish yourselves in that.

And when residing there before the conquest would lead to temptation, and the tempted one might yield with his tongue, and that is even if the heart is assured with faith in the form of polytheism, he said: ﴿So worship Me﴾, meaning: specifically with migration to a land where you feel safe, worship and be alert ﴿So worship Me﴾ because of what I have arranged for you of benefits from the expansion of the earth and others, worship without polytheism, neither with the tongue nor otherwise, nor belittling it, nor considering a creature in its disobedience, nor anything that draws towards it by fleeing from those who prevent you from that to those who assist you in it.
