Commentary
And when he finished with their example and with what its correctness depends upon, it was as if it was said in a manner of glorification for this example: This is their example. So he added to it his saying, indicating towards the examples of the Qur'an as a whole, in glorification of them and alerting to their great status and high rank: ﴿And those examples﴾ meaning: the lofty ones that cannot be attained by any kind of trickery; then he began his saying: ﴿We strike them﴾ with what we have of greatness, clarification ﴿for the people﴾, depicting the comprehensible meanings through the images of the tangible things, so that they may come closer to their minds and benefit from them. And thus is the case of all comparisons in ways for understanding the meanings that are concealed behind veils, bringing them forth and revealing them and depicting them.
And when they mocked what they saw of the examples wherein the fly and the mosquito were mentioned and similar to them, he summarized for them: ﴿And none understands them﴾ meaning: truly understands them so that he may benefit from them ﴿except the knowledgeable﴾ meaning: those who are prepared for knowledge and whose nature has been shaped by what has been infused into their hearts of its lights, and what has shone in their breasts of its secrets. They place things in their proper places; Al-Harith ibn Abi Usamah narrated from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with them, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The knowledgeable one who understood from Allah, so he acted in obedience to Him and avoided His wrath." Al-Baghawi said: And the example is a common saying that includes a comparison of the other to the first.
