Commentary

And when the decree was: Our messengers did what they promised him regarding his salvation and the destruction of all their villages. So We left it, as if no one had ever dwelt therein. He then emphasized with His words, indicating the virtue of those addressed by this story from among the Arabs and others. There is nothing between them and guidance except their reflection on their matter along with detachment from desires: "And indeed, We left" by virtue of Our greatness "from it" meaning: from that village "a sign" as a mark of Our ability over all that We desire. "A clear proof" which is the black, foul water that overwhelmed all their villages after the sinking of it. It is distinct from all the waters of the earth due to it being the water of wrath for those who opposed creation with their actions, while it is well-known that it is upon the sinking.

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, had concealed from the sight of many people, He said: "For a people who use reason." He counted [those] who do not perceive it as being other than rational or a poet, as they do not recognize that it is a sign nor do they have the capacity to act upon what He desires.
