Commentary
And when the statement made clear, as has passed, their destruction, they explicitly stated it. They said, specifying its type, explaining what they informed him of, confirming the notification that the matter had certainly been concluded so that they may intercede for them. This is in accordance with the habit of the prophets in their compassion for their nations: "Indeed, We are about to send down" meaning: there is no doubt "upon the people of this village a punishment" meaning: a torment that will cause severe turmoil, from which whoever is struck will be in distress, whoever he may be. "From the heavens" so its impact is great, its effect is severe. "Because of what they were" meaning: a firmly established state. "They were transgressing" meaning: they were departing at all times from the bounds of reason and modesty.
