Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, concluded this parenthetical statement with what He began it with and with what He ended the previous words of the Friend, blessings and peace be upon him, this added to what you see of the severe threat. He began to complete his story, blessings and peace be upon him, indicating that no one can overpower Him, nor can anyone provide help against His painful punishment. He pointed out that they caused a contradiction to what his words necessitated, signaling their obstinacy and persistence in their erroneous belief. So He said: 'So what was the response of his people?' meaning: those whose acceptance is hoped for his advice, knowing from them their abundant compassion and great trustworthiness and counsel. 'Except that they said,' with the greatest rudeness, 'Kill him,' meaning: with the sword, 'or burn him,' meaning: with fire.
And when the opinion of all settled on this second option, and he had no supporter among them, He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated to him with His saying, aligning it with what you can determine: [So the one who is esteemed refused to kill him because it is a punishment familiar to those who deserve it among the criminals. He had performed an unprecedented act in history, so what should be specific to the punishment for it is a punishment that has not been known like it, which is burning in a strange form. So they turned away from killing and settled on burning.] So they gathered wood for him until they filled the space between the mountains, and they ignited it with fire until it burned what came near it with intense combustion, and they hurled him into it with a catapult. 'So Allah saved him' with what He has of perfect greatness, saving him and keeping him alive without needing to gradualize. 'From the fire,' meaning: from its burning and harm, and it benefited him by burning his bindings.
And when his story encompassed in this context clear signs and miraculous matters, He, glorified and exalted is He, magnified its matter with His saying, affirming the need for further mention of it, and placing them in a position of stopping from what the evident verses called them to believe, the status of one who denies it: 'Indeed, in that,' meaning: what He mentioned of his matter and what his story was filled with of wisdom, 'are signs,' meaning: conclusive proofs in indicating all of Allah's matters from His actions in the creations and meanings, because the fire did not burn him and it burned his bindings and everything that passed over it from a bird. And with the sight of that, they did not believe and could not harm him with anything other than that.
And when what is for a thing is indeed what benefits it, and He had veiled them, glorified and exalted is He, with desires and distracting pleasures from utilizing the light of reason, He said: 'For a people who believe,' meaning: who turn to utilizing the light of reason that Allah has bestowed upon them, so they believe in the unseen until faith has become - with the abundance of what they polished their hearts with by reflecting on its causes - for them a creation, such that they, at every moment, renew their advancement in its ranks and move about in its shelters and places.
