And when the estimation was: 'So those who believed in the signs of their Lord and in His meeting, those are the ones who hope for My mercy, and those will have an eternal bliss.' And He had commanded them to use reasoning, and warned them to return from misguidance, by what He had preserved for men of some evidence. He followed it with what He had cut off, and said, adding to that estimation: 'And those who disbelieved,' meaning: they concealed what the lights of reason had made clear to them, 'in the signs of Allah,' meaning: the evident signs of the Greatest King, both visible and audible, which are clearer than them. 'And in His meeting,' by resurrection after death, which He informed them of and established the evidence for His power over it by what is clearer than that. 'Those are,' meaning: the far ones, the hated ones, those who are distant in understanding, who have been removed from the rank of humanity, rather from the rank of all living beings. 'They have despaired,' meaning: their despair has been confirmed from now, rather from eternity, because they did not hope for the meeting with Allah on a day; nor did any of them say: 'My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment.'

And when most of them were obstinate, He clarified that the one speaking these words, elevated above the reach of mankind, is Allah, who is mentioned by His name in this system, by turning to the style of speech, alerting the listeners to what has filled the hearts and broken the backs. He said: 'From My mercy,' meaning: from what I will do with them of honor by entering Paradise and other than it, the act of the Merciful; and He repeated the reference to magnify the matter, saying: 'And those,' meaning: those for whom there is no distance after their distance. And He mocked them in the expression with the preposition of ownership, which is commonly used for the beloved, saying: 'For them is a painful punishment,' meaning: a punishment that is exceedingly painful in this world and the Hereafter.
