Commentary
And when there remained no obstacle to the ability to bring them back except their own resistance to it, He invalidated it according to their claim to it and said: ﴿And you are not﴾ meaning: all of you, Arabs and others ﴿able to frustrate﴾ meaning: to bring about their frustration in resurrecting you and punishing you ﴿in the earth﴾ however you turn in its apparent and hidden aspects.
And when the speech here is more complete in regard to what comes after resurrection, and the conditions there are beyond what the intellect can independently grasp, and the effect of ability is more complete and comprehensive, and more important and inclusive, and some souls may be in the heavens after death, He said: ﴿Nor in the heaven﴾ [meaning:] if it were assumed that you reached it after death by resurrection or before it, since all is part of His dominion, how could He be frustrated by those in His dominion? And it is possible that there is a reference to the story of Nimrod in his building the tower by which he intended to reach the heavens, especially since the verses are surrounding the story of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, before and after it.
And when He informed them that they are subject to His power, and there remained a possibility that others might support them, He explicitly denied it and said: ﴿And what is with you﴾ meaning: all of you and others, O you who are gathered, and He indicated the low status of everyone besides Him by saying: ﴿besides Allah﴾ meaning: the One who is greater than every great thing; [and He confirmed the denial by affirming the preposition and said:] ﴿of a protector﴾ meaning: a close one who would protect you for the sake of kinship ﴿nor a helper﴾ for anything other than that because there is no equal for Him.
