Commentary
﴿So We saved him﴾ meaning: Noah, peace be upon him, by that greatness of ours which nothing can overpower. ﴿And the companions of the ship﴾ are from his children and his followers, from drowning. And what can be the measure of the people of one ship in number and multitude? ﴿And We made it﴾ meaning: the act or the ship, meaning: itself and its kind, by that greatness ﴿a sign﴾ meaning: a sign of Allah's power and knowledge and His saving of the obedient and His destruction of the disobedient ﴿for the worlds﴾. For if no incident greater than it has occurred in history, nor stranger nor more famous in the covering of all the earth with water, in its length and breadth, and drowning all who are on it from animals: humans and non-humans, and saving people in it by what He prepared before the act from the cause of that which continues to benefit through the repetition of ages and the succession of times, and being a sign. As for the humans who were in that time, the matter is clear for them. As for others from the animals, they have been known for their knowledge of the observed particulars that that water cannot be escaped from in the abode of causes except by this ship. So the guidance to its action for salvation before the occurrence of the cause of destruction indicates the completeness of knowledge and the comprehensiveness of power, and that whoever was guided to it without the people of that era, all of them were guided by the informing of Allah without others. And the first half of the first verse [of this story] is a consolation and a comfort indicating the two signs of the trial at the beginning of the surah, and its second half is a warning and a precaution, [and in it] is an indication of the third verse, and the third verse, and the other verse is good news and a promise, [and in it] is an indication of what follows.
