Commentary
And when every person who leads someone down a path is a partner in their action therein, they will have upon them a burden like that of their own if the path is one of misguidance, and they will have a reward like that of their own if it is a path of guidance. Allah, the Most High, said, affirming their denial of the Hereafter and all that is in it: ﴿And they will surely bear﴾ meaning: the disbelievers ﴿their burdens﴾ which they have imposed upon their weak selves by what they have earned ﴿and other burdens﴾ for others ﴿along with their burdens﴾ by what they caused others to go astray, and from establishing the wrongful traditions that continue after them. So whoever establishes an evil tradition, upon them is its burden and the burden of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection, without anyone's burden being lessened in the least.
And when the questioning is in a manner of disdain and humiliation, from the terror (p-403) in the heart that is not from actions, He said: ﴿And they will surely be questioned﴾ meaning: from everyone whom the Master commanded to question them ﴿on the Day of Resurrection﴾ meaning: the day they deny, and they are disdainful of it. The emphasis is either for their denial of that day or for the assumption that the scholar will not be questioned about what he knows.
﴿About what they used to﴾ meaning: with utmost desire ﴿fabricate﴾ meaning: they deliberately lie about it, and they exercise their thoughts in committing it [and they persist in it]. The expression in the form of 'if'ti'al indicates that they knew the truth of the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and they deliberately lied in their promise to those whom they deceived.
