And when the translation of what has passed from the category of the hopeful, the struggler, and the doer of good is: Among the people - as has been indicated - are those who believe in Allah. So when they are harmed for the sake of Allah, they are patient and seek reward, waiting for the recompense from the Most High. However, he omitted from every sentence what was indicated by what he mentioned in the other, adding to it: "And among the people" meaning: the wavering ones. "Who says" meaning: with his tongue without assurance from his heart: "We have believed in Allah" meaning: the One who is characterized by attributes of perfection. He then indicated after the hint to the abundance of this type by referring to the plural pronoun - to the extent that the harm in this abode is a necessary blow that must occur, by his saying with the tool of affirmation: "So when he is harmed" meaning: a trial for him and a test from any harm that may come. "For the sake of Allah" meaning: because he is in the way of [Allah] who nothing can compare to in His greatness and all His attributes, through a trial that He inflicts upon His servants. "He made" meaning: that one who claims faith "a trial for the people" meaning: for him due to what he suffers from their harm in his body, which when he dies, their harm ceases from him. "Like the punishment of Allah" meaning: encompassing all things, so there is no hope of being freed from it. Thus, the tortured one is directed after arrogance and pride to submission and humiliation, because he has no equal nor protector against it, and its punishment cannot be endured, as it is upon both the soul and the body. It cannot be separated from either of them by death or life except by His will, until the actions of this tortured one in the face of the people's punishment for him become obedience to them in all that they command him, outwardly and inwardly. It then becomes clear that he was lying in his claim of faith, and that hope is limited to the Sovereign, the Judge. He indicated that the trial may perhaps continue until death and its duration may be prolonged by expressing it with a tool of doubt. He emphasized to distance every listener from the occurrence of any denial from anyone by saying: "And if victory comes" meaning: for the party of Allah, the steadfast in faith.
And when the goodness from Him is merely a pure favor, He is not obligated to anyone anything. He expressed what indicates that, referring to the fact that He does it for the sake of him ﷺ, saying: "From your Lord" meaning: the One who does good to you by aiding the people of your religion, fulfilling His promise to them, and bringing joy to you.
And when this state is one of prosperity, He expressed it with the plural pronoun, referring to something similar to the saying of the poet:
"And how many brothers there are when you count them, but they are few in times of calamity."
He said: "They will surely say" meaning: these who did not endure, deceiving the believers out of fear and hope. He expressed the state of hardship with the singular form so that it would not be assumed that the plural is a constraint. And he gathered here as an indication that they are not ashamed of lying even in front of witnesses. They confirmed with their knowledge that their saying is denied because they are liars, saying: "Indeed, we were with you" meaning: we did not separate from you in our hearts even if we obeyed those with our tongues.
And when the estimation was: Are not our allies, who are perceptive of their conditions, knowledgeable? He responded to him, denying his saying: "Is not Allah" the One who encompasses the knowledge of the hidden as He encompasses the knowledge of the apparent? "He knows what is in the breasts of the worlds," meaning: all of them. Nothing from that is hidden from Him, whether it is sincerity or hypocrisy. Rather, He is more knowledgeable than the owners of the breasts about that.
