Commentary
And when the answer was for all who were fair: they are in clear misguidance because they carve out from themselves what has no proof for it. And you have brought guidance because you brought it from Allah. He built upon this saying: ﴿And what﴾. It is permissible that the sentence be a state of the pronoun in 'upon you' and what is between them is an interruption for the importance of responding to the denier of the resurrection. That is, He has made it obligatory upon you while you are in a state that you have not, and it can be said: When his return to Mecca was extremely distant due to the multitude of disbelievers and the fewness of supporters, He brought it closer by saying, informing that many matters may be contrary to hope, and even against the norm: ﴿And what you were hoping﴾ that is, in the past in a state of states ﴿that the Book be sent down to you﴾ that is, in this belief and not in anything of it; nor was this of your nature, nor did anyone hear it from you one day of days, nor did you prepare for that the usual preparation of learning writing or sitting with a scholar to be subjected to a type of accusation, as indicated by His saying, exalted is He, in the verse that follows: ﴿And you were not reciting before it any Book﴾ [Al-Ankabut: 48], and the term 'the Book' was chosen here because the context is for the mercy which among its fruits is the gathering (p-379) of the firm, and that is the indication of the Book; then He said: ﴿Except﴾ that is, but the Book was sent down to you ﴿as a mercy﴾ that is, for a great mercy for you and for all creatures through you, which you did not hope for ﴿from your Lord﴾ that is, the One who is gracious to you by making you chosen for that, by calling to Him and limiting aspirations to Him. And He expressed with the tool of connected exception indicating that his state before prophethood was of distancing from the worship of idols and from being close to them and swearing by them and from all immorality, and from turning to Allah by seclusion with Him and worshiping Him, a success from Allah, was the state of one who hopes for that.
And when the striving resulted from what preceded in [stirring the aspirations to adhere to] the command of Allah, hoping for what is with Him, glorified and exalted is He, from reward, and thanking for the sending down of the Book, He said in the context of emphasizing that human nature necessitates perceiving the manifestation of the disbelievers for a matter of great success, due to their multitude and strength and honor: ﴿So do not be﴾ [at that time] because of their being characterized for you by their multitude ﴿a supporter﴾ that is, an assistant ﴿to the disbelievers﴾ by remaining among them, or by being slack in striving in their call, despairing from them for what you see of their distance from response, even if your warning is prolonged, do not tire as we did not tire, for we have conveyed to them the message, and we continued for them the admonition (p-380) and the storytelling, and we are capable of destroying them in a moment, and guiding them in the least glance. And just as Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, after being favored did not become a supporter for the criminals, and this is a training from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, for the leaders of the nation in calling to Allah at the time of the multitude of opposition and the fewness of the supporting allies.
