Commentary

And when he caused this which led him to disbelief in his Lord, He took him with punishment. He indicated this, glorified and exalted is He, by His saying: ﴿So We caused the earth to swallow him﴾, meaning: by that which We have of greatness ﴿and his house﴾, meaning: it is to the extent of what We mentioned of His greatness with his wealth and adornments. It is a great matter, gathering many creatures and great furnishings, so that no one may say: Indeed, the swallowing of him was due to a desire to take his wealth ﴿the earth﴾, and he is from the people of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, and very close to him - as reported by the people of news. So beware, O nation of this Prophet, not to reject what has been given to you of mercy by his message, lest you be destroyed even if you are the closest people to him. For indeed, the prophets, just as they do not bring guidance to the hearts of the enemies, likewise they do not prevent them from ruin nor intercede for them ever, if they are certain that they are among the people of misery. ﴿So what﴾, meaning: so it caused that he ﴿had not﴾, meaning: for Qarun, and he emphasized the negation - when it became established in minds that the great ones are supported - by the addition of the particle in his saying: ﴿from a group﴾, meaning: a faction of people who rush to him after what overwhelmed him astonished them. The root of the group is the gathering of birds, as if it was named that due to their frequent return and speed to the place from which they went ﴿to support him﴾.

And when Allah, the Exalted, is higher than all things, He said: ﴿besides Allah﴾, meaning: the One possessing the attributes of perfection, descending in greatness and majesty. For whoever was of his opinion perished, and whoever was among the allies of Allah observed Allah in his matter, so they did not ask Allah about it, and he knew that the truth is for Allah, and he strayed from it - as in the verse that preceded it - what he was fabricating ﴿and he was not﴾, meaning: he ﴿among those who take revenge﴾ for themselves with their strength.
