Commentary
And when leaving joy is a reason for asceticism, which is a reason for closeness to Allah, it is as if it were said: 'And be ascetic in it, for indeed Allah loves the ascetics.' And seek, meaning: strive to seek in that which Allah has given you, that is, the greatest King who has all authority over these wealth, at the time of your ability. The Hereafter is by spending it in what Allah loves, such that your seeking that is deserving of it becomes like the soul, and the one who is given is like the body, so that it may be alive by that seeking. Nothing should be from it without life, for your action in that reminds you that this abode is a place of departure and transition, and everything in it is destined to perish. This necessitates asceticism in all that is in it of wealth.
And when that is very difficult for the souls, along with what is in it of the suspicion of accusation, they said: 'And do not forget,' meaning: do not leave, leaving like the forgetful, 'your share of this world,' leaving what is forgotten. Rather, utilize the permissible from food, clothing, marriages, and dwellings, and what is suitable for them. And let your utilization of that - as indicated by the context - be without extravagance or arrogance that necessitates leaving the description of fairness. And from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: 'And do not forget your health, strength, energy, and wealth, so that you may seek the Hereafter with them.'
And when He allowed for him moderation in enjoying provisions, and the soul is inclined to greed, if it is permitted a little from the world, it makes that the greatest of great things. They followed that with what might restrain its greed, so they said: 'And do good,' meaning: perform good by giving wealth to the needy and spending in all acts of obedience, 'as Allah has done good to you,' meaning: the One who possesses all attributes of perfection, adorned with the cloak of greatness and majesty, 'by giving to you,' so that you give the giving of one who does not fear poverty, as He has expanded upon you.
And when the soul, by its nature, if it is not restrained by the reins of the law, tends towards extravagance and injustice, they said: 'And do not seek,' meaning: do not desire the desire for what 'corruption in the earth,' by being stingy or extravagant, nor being arrogant towards the servants of Allah or belittling them. Then they followed that with its reason, emphasizing that most of the corruptors are given abundance in this world, and most people find it unlikely that they would be given abundance for someone not beloved. It was said: 'Indeed, Allah,' meaning: the All-Knowing of everything, the All-Powerful over everything, 'does not love the corruptors,' meaning: He does not treat them as one who loves them, so He does not honor them.
