And when he mentioned the first proof from the evidence for the invalidation of partnership, that the partners did not respond to them and they had no ability to aid them nor to aid themselves, it was sometimes said: that this is for something other than inability. This indicates here to polytheism, there is no doubt about the evidence. He said, [shifting the statement to the manifestation of speaking with a tone of greatness because it is merely an action], "And We took out" meaning: We singled out with strength and might, "from every nation a witness" (p-347) meaning: and he is their Messenger, so he witnessed against them with their deeds and what they were in of confusion in the partnerships of polytheism.

And when their questioning about their evidence in their polytheism resulted from that, he said: "So We said" meaning: to the nations: "Bring forth your proof" meaning: your decisive evidence to which you fled in this world, and you relied upon it in your polytheism, as is the case with those of understanding that they do not build anything on a foundation other than it. "So they knew" because of [this] question when they were compelled, so they searched and exerted effort but found no evidence for them at all. "That the truth" meaning: in divinity, "belongs to Allah" meaning: the Most High King to whom belongs all command and there is no equal to Him, there is no partnership for anything with Him. "And they were led astray" meaning: it vanished and the absence of the lost thing was invalidated. "From them what they were" meaning: a being that is like their nature. "They fabricate" meaning: they say it with the words of a liar who is deliberate in lying because there is no evidence for it and no doubt that necessitates error in it.
