Commentary

And when the decree was made: So, from His wisdom, He made for you hearing and sight, so that you may contemplate His signs and reflect upon His creations. He added to it, "And from His mercy," meaning: which encompasses all things, not from fear or hope or attachment to any of the purposes. "He made for you the night and the day," two great signs in which and by which all your interests are arranged. He reserved most of His mercy for the Hereafter. And He erased the sign of the night, "so that you may find tranquility in it," meaning: so that you do not strive in your livelihood. And He made the sign of the day enlightening, "so that you may seek from His bounty," by striving in your livelihood with your efforts. The sign is from the interconnection: He first mentioned tranquility as evidence for the omission of striving in livelihood, and seeking secondly as evidence for the omission of the lack of striving in livelihood first.

And when He mentioned this blessing that He bestowed from this mercy, and mentioned the reason for making it in the mentioned manner, He mentioned another reason that is specifically intended because it is the result of hearing and sight. He preceded the encouragement to use them and said: "And perhaps you will be grateful," meaning: and let your state be like that of one who is hoped for gratitude from him due to the continuous blessings that are renewed for you by accepting them from the Bestower, and by what He has arranged for you with kindness in what He has guaranteed you in the abode of causes regarding livelihood and the Hereafter from comfort with tranquility after what He has granted you of profits and gifts through spreading and changing. As for the Hereafter, since it is not based on causes, and Paradise has no toil in it in any way, there is no need for night in it.
