Commentary
Say, 'Have you considered if Allah has made the day upon you?' That is: the One to Whom belongs all command, with His majesty and overwhelming perfection, 'a day that its heat balances the moisture of the night, so that with both of them the growth of plants is completed, and other than that from all decrees, 'everlastingly.' That is: continuously, from 'sard,' which is the continuation with an increase of the letter 'm' as an exaggeration in it, 'until the Day of Resurrection.' That is: which no rational being hears its denial, 'Is there a deity other than Allah?' The Majestic, who has no equal, and He is, over all things, a Guardian.
And since darkness is not intended in itself, and it comes after light in the utmost indication of His Oneness, He refrained from its name and said, expressing what has passed: 'It comes to you by night.' That is: it arises from darkness; then He clarified by what indicates what He omitted from the first, saying: 'You dwell therein.' So the verse is from the interweaving: He mentioned light first as an indication of the omission of darkness second, and night and dwelling second as an indication of the omission of day and spreading first.
And since light is that in which sight penetrates, He said: 'Do you not see?' That is: with sight and insight how the veils of darkness are lifted from the faces of the noble lights, then they are covered with the black of the garments of modesty, and the faces of the lights and the light. [Ibn Hubayrah said: Al-Mubarrid said: The authority of hearing is in the night and the authority of sight is in the day.]
