Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: What is with the people of the first division that they do not seek salvation from the narrowness of that calamity, to the spaciousness of this hope? The answer was: Your Lord has prevented them from that. Or, why has He not determined for the people of this division success as He determined for the people of the first division misery? The answer was: Indeed, your Lord is not obliged to anything. He means by saying: ﴿And your Lord﴾, that is: the One who is good to you, in agreement with those who agree with you and in opposition to those who oppose you, for great wisdoms that are beyond the understanding of most thoughts. ﴿He creates what He wills﴾ of guidance and misguidance and other than that, for He is the absolute owner; there is no preventer for Him from anything of that. ﴿And He chooses﴾, that is: He enacts the choice for what He wills. He intends disbelief for the wicked and faith for the righteous; there is no objection against Him. For perhaps one of those who has shown repentance may have reverted due to what has been decreed upon him in the Book, and he became among the people of loss. So do not grieve for whoever has missed you, whoever he may be, and know that he has harmed only himself. And whoever has missed us, it is enough for him that we miss him.
And when this made clear that another, glorified is He, when He wills something, it is only that it coincides with His will, He stated it clearly by saying: ﴿They have no choice﴾, that is: to do or for anything to be done for them of all that they choose from bringing the Messenger with what Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, brought or other than that. It is a name of choice, which stands in place of the source, and it is also the name of the chosen one. So it is an expression by the cause about the cause, for when it is left alone, it becomes barren and thus non-existent. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawami: And therein is evidence that the servant in his choice is not a chooser. For this reason, the people of contentment set their tents before their Lord and entrusted their affairs to Him with pure delegation. That is: if He commands them or forbids them, they hasten. And if they are struck by the arrows of great calamities, they are patient. And if He honors them, they honor themselves and show generosity. And if He humiliates them, they are pleased and submit. They are not pleased except with what pleases Him, and they do not desire except what He desires, so He enacts it:
The passion has stopped with me where You are, so there is no delay for me from it nor advancement.
I find blame in my love for You sweet, so for the remembrance of You, let the blamers blame me.
And You have humiliated me, so I have humiliated myself, being humble. What does it matter to You who is honored among those I honor?
And when the occurrence of something contrary to its intended purpose is a deficiency, and the occurrence of polytheism is a degradation and incapacity, He, exalted is He, said, indicating the result of these verses in negating that from Him: ﴿Glory be to Allah﴾, that is: the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection is far removed from anyone choosing something that He does not will, so it reaches Him or occurs in a manner upon Him. ﴿And exalted﴾, that is: He is exalted above the striving in that, for His exaltation cannot be reached by minds in any way, nor can the essence of His guidance be comprehended. ﴿From what they associate﴾, for there is no will for what they claimed as partners. And if they had a will, its execution would have been dependent on their incapacity to create the Creator.
