And when it became known by these verses the state of one who persists in his disbelief and does evil by way of the expression, and it was indicated regarding the state of one who repents, he was promised a good promise, a gentle indication that resulted from that [longing for] the clarification of their state. He said, detailing and arranging according to what you estimate: This is the state of one who persists in his disbelief. As for the one who repents, meaning: from his disbelief, and he said: and believes, explicitly stating what is known as an obligation, for disbelief and faith are opposites. It is not possible to abandon one of them except by taking the other. And he does, as a confirmation of his claim with his tongue, righteous deeds.
And when the soul is inclined towards deficiencies, hastening towards vile acts, it was indicated to the difficulty of continuing on the path of guidance except with great striving by His saying: So perhaps, meaning: that it results from his state this hope in that he may be in the utmost stability among the successful, meaning: those saved from the evil of that day, victorious with all that is desired, by their continuing in obedience to Him until death. And he did not cut for him the success, even if it were like that in the customary practices of kings, as a declaration that nothing is required of Him to last, and that His decree and destiny should be guarded against, for all is from Him.
