And when he mentioned that allowing what the souls are stingy about from excess wealth is one of the signs of faith, he followed it by saying that the sadness of what the tongues expend from excess words is one of the signs of knowledge. He said: ﴿And when they hear vain talk﴾ meaning: what does not benefit in religion or worldly matters, such as insults, lies, and mockery, and the like, ﴿they turn away from it﴾ out of nobility from indecency. ﴿And they say﴾ meaning: as an admonition and a response to the speaker: ﴿For us﴾ meaning: specifically, ﴿are our deeds﴾ you will not be rewarded for anything from them nor punished. ﴿And for you﴾ meaning: specifically, ﴿are your deeds﴾ we are not held accountable for anything from them, so we do not engage in responding to you because your blame of us does not diminish anything from our reward, nor does engaging in responding to it diminish us.
And when the meaning of this is that they are safe from them, they expressed this to them by saying: ﴿Peace be upon you﴾ meaning: from us. And when it has become customary that such a thing breaks the vain talker and rebukes the aggressor, they pointed out to them the ugliness of their condition, in response to their misguidance, by saying as an explanation for what has passed from their words: ﴿We do not seek﴾ meaning: we do not burden ourselves to seek ﴿the ignorant﴾ meaning: we want something from their conditions or their words, or anything else from their flaws.
