Commentary

﴿Those﴾ meaning: the high-ranking ones. ﴿They will be given﴾ is built for the passive because the intention is the giving, and the giver is known. ﴿Their reward will be doubled﴾ for their faith in Him, both in the unseen and in testimony, or by the first book and then the second book. ﴿For what they were patient﴾ regarding what was of faith before sight, after they were shaken to abandon it for the familiarity of their religion that they had, and other trials from the King, the Just Judge.

And since patience cannot be complete except by possessing virtues and detaching from vices, He said, adding to “they believe,” indicating the renewal of these actions at all times: ﴿And they repel﴾ with good deeds ﴿the evil﴾ meaning: from all of that, so they erase it with it.

And since some of this repelling cannot be completed except by generosity, He said: ﴿And from what We have provided them﴾ meaning: by Our greatness, not by their strength or power, whether it is little or much, ﴿they spend﴾ relying in creation on what He has provided them; Al-Baghawi said: “Said Ibn Jubayr: Forty men came with Ja'far, may Allah be pleased with him, from Abyssinia, meaning: they embraced Islam. When they saw what the Muslims were facing in terms of poverty, they asked the Prophet ﷺ for their wealth, and they brought it and shared it with the Muslims.”
