Commentary
And when it comes to remembrance, there is that which is indicated by mere intellect, and there is that which is joined to it along with that intellect. And the possessor of this oath is more deserving of reflection. It is as if it were said: Did they remember? It was said: Yes, the people of the Book, who are truly its people, remembered. And this is the meaning of His saying: "Those to whom We have given the Book," meaning: by Our greatness with which We have preserved them with the Book, meaning: the knowledge from the Torah, the Gospel, and other books of the prophets. They recite that with the right recitation, in some of the time that was before it, meaning: the Qur'an. They, specifically, believe in it, meaning: the Qur'an, not in anything that contradicts it. They believe, meaning: they establish faith in it at the time of its arrival to them, a faith that continues to renew.
