And when he excelled in these methods of revealing the hidden matters, and he increased in presenting the evidence for the truth and establishing the proofs for the necessity of following Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, they were, by turning away from all of that, as if they were denying that anything of that had come to them. He said, in a manner that you can understand: 'Indeed, We have certainly given you in these verses the greatest clear signs,' warning with a word of expectation that is coupled with an oath that it is expected here to be said: 'And indeed, We have connected [it].' That is, according to what We have of greatness, which necessitates that the slightest indication from it suffices for them, specifically. Thus, their specification by that is a great favor that they must be grateful for. 'The saying' means: We have followed some of the saying - which there is no saying in reality other than it - with some being revealed gradually, part of it following part, to be a response to their words and a solution to their perplexities, so that it is closer to understanding and more deserving of contemplation, with its variation in promises and warnings, news and admonitions, wisdom and advice, rulings and benefits. We have increased in that until His miraculous verses and His clear signs were as if they were the horses of the monks on the day of racing the peers, in the arena of the field, except that each of them is a leader in sight.

And when He made them weep by warning them with this emphasis on their exaggeration in lying, whether by saying or by action, that nothing had come to them that necessitated the reminder, He followed that connection with: 'Perhaps they will remember.' That is, to be in a state like those who are hoped for that they will return to their minds and find in what is imprinted in them that which reminds them of the truth, as indicated by the revelation.
