Commentary
And when the condition of their truthfulness was established, He made clear their falsehood regarding the assumption of no recompense. He said: "So if they do not respond" [meaning: the disbelievers who are seeking guidance in bringing it]. And when the response itself extends to the supplication, and with the 'lam' to the supplicant, and the mention of the supplicant is more indicative of caring for him and paying attention to him, He said (p-312) [singling out his pronoun ﷺ because no one else understands the comparison in guidance]: "For you" meaning: they should seek the response and bring it forth in faith or in bringing what you have mentioned to them and called them to, which is more guided, from the Qur'an and the Torah, so that their truthfulness may be evident. "Know" you that "they only follow" [meaning: with all their effort] what they are upon of disbelief and denial, "their desires" meaning: always, and most of desire is contrary to guidance, so they are unjust and not guided. Rather, they are the most misguided of people, and that is the meaning of His saying: "And who is more misguided" [meaning: than them]. However, He said: "than he who follows" [meaning: with all his effort] "his desire" as a connection of the ruling by description; and by His saying: "without guidance" meaning: without clarity and guidance "from Allah" meaning: the Most High King who possesses all attributes of perfection, it is evidence that desire may align with guidance, and the expression with the form of causation indicates that the follower, even if he is unjust, may not be the most unjust.
And when following desire in this manner is injustice, He concluded His statement making it clear so that it is not claimed to be specific to them: "Indeed, Allah" meaning: the Greatest King who has no repeller for His command "does not guide" and He made clear the place of the implicit for the generalization and said: "the unjust people" meaning: even if they are the strongest of people in following their desires, the verse is from the implication: He first established the following of desire as evidence for its removal secondly, and secondly, the injustice as evidence for its removal first.
