Commentary
And when they said that, it was as if it were said: So what did he do? He said: "Say" (p-311) as an obligation upon them if you are truthful in that I am a magician and my book is magic. Likewise, Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Bring a book" and he indicated by the expression in describing it as being from beyond that he is sufficient for them by being wise, extraordinary in his wisdom, even if he does not reach the pinnacle of strangeness by being detached from the miracle in its composition like the Torah. He said: "From Allah" meaning: the Most High King, indicating that it is from Him, His states, His wisdom, and His majesty. "He" meaning: that which you have brought, "is more guided than both" meaning: than what I have brought and what Musa brought. "Follow it" meaning: and leave them both.
And when he commanded them with his command to come forth, he mentioned his condition as a means of concession, to show fairness, and in reality, it is mockery of them. He said: "If you are" [O disbelievers! A firmly established state] "truthful" meaning: in that we are both magicians, then bring what I have obligated you with.
