Commentary

And when it was said, "Whoever initiates a good Sunnah will have its reward and the reward of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection, and whoever initiates a bad Sunnah will have its burden and the burden of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection." They were the first to insist and firmly establish in that time the denial of the verses and the concealment of the clear signs, due to their succession and abundance, their long duration and greatness. The rejection of reason and the following of misguidance was extremely distant, especially if it guaranteed destruction in this world and punishment in the Hereafter. Allah, the Exalted, said regarding the manifestation of greatness: ﴿And We made them﴾ [i.e., in this world] ﴿leaders﴾ meaning: followed in rejecting what no rational person would reject of these verses. That is, We made their matter famous so that hardly anyone would be ignorant of it. So whoever does like their actions of rejecting the truth and oppressing the creation, it is as if he has chosen to emulate them, even if he did not intend that. Thus, this was attributed to him as an elevation from the association with the fact that he acts in a manner that necessitates being characterized by it while he is rational about it. Just as no soul is killed unjustly except that there is upon the son of Adam the first a share of its blood, because he was the first to initiate killing. (p-299) The most deserving of people to be followed in the depths of their belief and the outwardness of their pretense, and the disappointment of their hopes and aspirations, are the people of heresy of the doctrine of union. May Allah destroy their supporters, hasten their destruction, and clarify this meaning with His saying: ﴿They call﴾ meaning: they create the supplication for whoever is deceived by their condition, so he was led astray by their misguidance ﴿to the Fire﴾ meaning: [and We made for them supporters who assist them] contrary to what We intended for the Children of Israel - as was previously mentioned at the beginning of the Surah - and We made them inheritors.

And when the predominant state of the leaders is victory, and it has been reported about their abandonment in this world, He said: ﴿And on the Day of Resurrection﴾ meaning: the Day of Mutual Loss ﴿they will not be supported﴾ meaning: there will be no kind of support for them at all, just as they were on the day of their destruction in this world, whether they are leaders or have a call. They will remain in torment, and they will have a bad return.
