Commentary

And when it was as if it was said: What is this that is being recounted from this news? He said: "Indeed, Pharaoh" is the king of Egypt who claimed divinity. "He exalted himself" meaning: by his claim to divinity and his tyranny over the servants of Allah and his oppression of them "in the land" [meaning: because we gathered the soldiers against him, so they were with him as one body, and we enforced his word with that]. And it is [and] if what is meant by it is the land of Egypt, then in its being mentioned there is an indication of its greatness and that it is like all the lands in its encompassing what is rare for others to encompass.

[And when the estimation is by what the conjunction indicates: so he denied that blessing, he followed it with his saying: ] "And He made" [by what We made for him of the enforcement of the word] "its people" meaning: the intended land "factions" meaning: groups that follow each group something and support it, and all are under his oppression and subject to his command. They have become with him like the kindling of firewood, he differentiated between them so that they would not conspire against him, so he would not reach what he wanted from them. [So their words became divided, and none of them would protect the other, so they became weak, and their matter fell into decline. The verse is from the intertwining, he mentioned the exaltation first as a proof of the decline second, and the division second as a proof of the gathering first], he made them like that in his state of being "seeking to weaken" meaning: he requests and finds that he is weakened, or it is a new statement. "A group of them" and they are the Children of Israel whose lives of all the people of Egypt were in the hands of one of them, and he is Yusuf, peace be upon him.

And he did with them from good what no father has done with his children, and despite that they repaid him with his children and brothers by enslaving them. Then what was not enough for them from that until they subjected them at the hands of this obstinate one to severe torment. So woe to the father of the strangers among them, both ancient and modern. Then He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified the weakening by His saying: "He is slaughtering" meaning: slaughtering much "their sons" meaning: at birth, and He appointed for that people who would watch every time a woman gave birth to a male, they would slaughter him out of fear for his kingdom, a claim from among their newborns. "And he keeps alive their females" meaning: he desires the life of the females and does not slaughter them.

And when this matter was extreme in its disgrace, not commanded by any law, nor does it have any benefit at all, because destiny - according to the estimation of the truth of the one who informed him - cannot be repelled by caution, Allah, the Exalted, said clarifying its ugliness, explaining what this indicated about his condition: "Indeed, he was" meaning: a firmly established state "of the corruptors" meaning: those who have a long-standing connection to this description, so he does not cease to commit this partial act that falls under what is established by him of the overall matter.
