Commentary

And when he said this, intending by it - as has been mentioned - to stop his people from following the truth, Allah, the Most High, followed it with the indication that they did what he intended. [And] although that was arrogance against the truth, He, the Most High, said: ﴿And they were arrogant﴾ meaning: and they produced arrogance with the utmost desire for it. ﴿He﴾ by his saying: this is what prevented them from the path. ﴿And his hosts﴾ by their stubbornness due to their intense desire for arrogance over the truth and following falsehood. ﴿In the land﴾ meaning: the land of Egypt, and perhaps he indicated it to show that if he could do that elsewhere, he would have done so. ﴿With falsehood﴾ meaning: arrogance accompanied by other than this truth. The expression (p-297) with the definite article indicates that the glorification by a type of truth is not arrogance, even if its appearance is like that. As for His arrogance, glorified and exalted is He, it is with all truth. He added to that what branched from it and from ignorance as well, and for this reason he did not connect it with 'fa' (and), so he said: ﴿And they thought﴾ meaning: Pharaoh and his people thought a thought upon which they built their belief in the essence of the religion that cannot be except by a decisive ﴿that they would not be returned to us﴾ meaning: neither in this world nor in the Hereafter. Therefore, they dared to commit the corruption they perpetrated.
