Commentary
﴿So when he came to it﴾ meaning: the fire. And when the last of the speech indicates clearly that the caller is Allah, glorified is He, he built for the object of the saying an indication of what was in the beginning of the matter from obscurity: ﴿He was called﴾. And when His calling, glorified is He, does not resemble the calling of others but is from all sides, and with that, there may be for some places an additional honor by a description of the attributes, either by being the first hearing from Him or otherwise, or it may be by considering the fact that Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, was [in it] said: ﴿from﴾ meaning: (p-279) Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, being close [to] ﴿the shore﴾ meaning: the side of ﴿the valley﴾ to the right of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him. And for that reason, he said: ﴿the right﴾, which is a description of the shore that is or being ﴿in the blessed spot﴾ being either the first or most of the calling or being Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, [close] ﴿to the tree﴾ as you say: I called so-and-so from his house. And perhaps the tree was large, so when he reached it, the light entered from its edge to its center, and it entered behind him to where it was in the middle, so he heard - while he was in it - the words from Allah, the Exalted, truly, and He is the speaker, glorified is He, not the tree. Al-Qushayri said: And the consensus is that he, blessings and peace be upon him, heard that night the words of Allah. And if that were the calling of the tree, the speaker would have been the tree. And Al-Taftazani explained the purposes that the choice of the proof of Islam is that he heard His eternal speech without sound or letter as His essence is seen in the Hereafter, without quantity or how. And it was mentioned in Ta-Ha that the intended direction is to the right of the one heading from Egypt to the honored Kaaba. And the tree: Al-Baghawi said: Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: It was a green Sidra that sparkled. And Qatadah, Muqatil, and Al-Kalbi said: It was a thorny bush. And Wahb said: It was from the wild shrub. And Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, said: It was the jujube. Then he mentioned the caller with His saying: ﴿O Musa﴾ and emphasized that He, glorified is He, for His greatness, makes everyone regard themselves as unworthy to be qualified for the speech, especially when the matter is at its beginning, so he said: ﴿Indeed, I am Allah﴾ meaning: the One who encompasses the most beautiful names and the highest attributes. And when this name was unseen, He introduced Himself with a description that is the gathering of the observable actions of man, so He said: ﴿Lord of the worlds﴾ meaning: the Creator of all creatures and their nurturer.
