Commentary
﴿So he watered﴾ that is: Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, ﴿for both of them﴾ when he knew their necessity, seizing the opportunity for reward and noble character in assisting the weak, along with what he was experiencing of fatigue and hunger. ﴿Then he turned away﴾ that is: Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, turned away, making his back face what his face was facing. ﴿To the shade﴾ that is: to rest under it and take a break, turning towards the Creator after he had fulfilled his advice to the creatures. He recognized that a place hardly lacks something that has a shadow, especially the places of water. ﴿He said﴾ because there is no deficiency in complaining to the Most High, the Absolute Rich. ﴿My Lord﴾
And when his state was one of great patience, like one who does not ask, he emphasized his request, indicating his intense longing when he asked in it, and increasing in supplication and tenderness. He said: (p-267) ﴿Indeed, I﴾ and to emphasize the neediness by attaching it to the lam without " , " he said: ﴿For what﴾ that is: for what thing. And when the provision that comes to a person is caused by the decree that comes from the Great Most High, he expressed it by saying 'sending down' and expressed it in the past tense to generalize the state of neediness and to confirm the fulfillment of the promise of provision. He said: ﴿You have sent down﴾ and perhaps he omitted the return for brevity due to his fatigue. ﴿To me of good﴾ that is: even if it is little. ﴿I am poor﴾ that is: in need. From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that he had reached such a state of distress that his stomach turned green from eating herbs and he weakened until his stomach stuck to his back. So look at these two prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, in their condition with what they had in their hands, and they are the essence of that time, so that you may have in that an example, and make it an imam and a role model, and say: O my father and mother! What the prophets and the righteous have faced of hardship and terrors in the prison of this world, a protection for them from it and honor from their Lord away from it, an elevation of their ranks with Him, and a belittling of it, even if the ignorant and deluded think otherwise. And in the story is encouragement towards good, and urging towards cooperation in righteousness, and a call to give kindness with effort.
