Commentary
And when he called with this supplication, Allah, the Exalted, informed him of His response, indicating the direction of his intention as an addition to the benefit. He said: "And when" meaning: Allah answered his supplication, so He saved him from them and directed him to Madyan. And when he "turned" meaning: he approached with his face, intending "towards" [that is:] the path that its traveler encounters the land of "Madyan," the city of the Prophet of Allah, Shu'ayb, blessings and peace be upon him, turning his heart towards his Lord. He said: [This is] because he does not know the way: "Perhaps" meaning: it is fitting, deserving, and appropriate.
And when his concern for Allah was complete due to his great vigilance, he said, presenting it to Him: "My Lord" meaning: the One who is good to me with great nurturing in the matters that are destructive. "To guide me to a straight" meaning: just and moderate "path" which is the way that He will make him aware of without deviation.
