And when he mentioned the killing and followed it with what is more important regarding the Hereafter, he mentioned what resulted from it in the worldly affairs and said: ﴿So he became﴾ meaning: Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, ﴿in the city﴾ meaning: the one in which he killed the killed man ﴿fearful﴾ meaning: because of his killing of him ﴿watching for﴾ meaning: remaining in fear, frequently looking around with his neck, terrified of a sudden occurrence that might come to him in that state. Al-Baghawi said: And 'watching for' means waiting for the undesirable.

﴿So when﴾ meaning: suddenly ﴿the one who sought his help﴾ meaning: asked for his support from his followers ﴿yesterday﴾ meaning: the day that follows the day of his calling for help from him ﴿is calling out to him﴾ meaning: asking for what removes the distress he is crying out about from another Egyptian who was oppressing him. It is as if it was said: So what did Musa say to him after he had put him in what he disliked? It was said: ﴿He said to him﴾ meaning: to this one who is calling for help ﴿Musa﴾.

And when the situation necessitated that this Israelite would remain for a period without disputing with anyone out of fear of the consequence of that killing, he emphasized his saying: ﴿Indeed, you are certainly a misguided one﴾ meaning: one who is greatly astray ﴿clear﴾ meaning: clearly astray, not hidden, because what happened yesterday was not enough to exempt him from disputing with one whom he cannot bear, even if you are wronged; then he approached them to support him.
