Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, bestowed upon him the response to his request, the listener longed for his gratitude for it. So he was answered by saying: ﴿He said, My Lord﴾ meaning: O You who has done good to me with every beautiful thing. And when making something a compensation for something else affirms it and is more deserving of the determination upon it, he said: ﴿because You have bestowed upon me﴾ meaning: because of Your bestowal upon me with forgiveness and other things. And since it was in the context of glorifying the blessing, he repeated the preposition for emphasis in the speech, and to indicate that what is associated with it is a result of the bestowal. And he coupled it with the negation particle indicating emphasis, saying: ﴿I will not be a supporter﴾ meaning: a companion or a partner or a helper ﴿for the wrongdoers﴾ meaning: those who cut off what Allah has commanded to be joined, meaning: I will not be among the people of the Copts, for their corruption is great, and their oppression of Your servants, the children of Your allies, is continuous and severe. I have no ability to abandon their support, and that leads to such actions. So I am not suitable for migration to them. And this is from the saying of the Arabs: he came to us in his support - with the damm, with the kasra, and with the tanween - and his support, meaning: his tribe.
