And when this was one of the reasons for [his rejection], he mentioned in a general context another reason close to it, saying: ﴿And We prohibited﴾ meaning: We prevented by Our greatness, which cannot be disregarded, and everything diminishes before it, ﴿the wet nurses﴾ the plural of wet nurse, which is one who is hired for nursing from outsiders. That is: We ruled by preventing him from nursing from them. He borrowed the term prohibition for prevention because it is a prevention that contains mercy; Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: Prohibition of prevention is not the prohibition of law.
And when he had indeed nursed from his mother from the time she gave birth to him until the time he was cast into the sea, the prohibition did not encompass the past time. He affirmed the connection and said: ﴿before﴾ meaning: before his mother commanded his sister with what she commanded her with and after she cast him, so that this would be a reason for returning him to her. He did not nurse from anyone else, so they were concerned for him, and his sister came to them and they said to her: Do you have a wet nurse to guide us to her, perhaps he will accept her breast? ﴿She said﴾ meaning: So his sister approached him after she looked at him and said to them when she saw them in utmost concern for his nursing when they presented the wet nurses to him, and he refused to nurse from any one of them: ﴿Do you have a need that I﴾ [would] guide you to the people of a household﴾ and she did not say: to a woman, to broaden the circle of suspicion. ﴿They will take care of him for you﴾ meaning: they will take him and support him and take care of all his needs from nursing and others for your sake, and she increased their desire by saying: ﴿and they are sincere to him﴾ meaning: their sincerity to him is firm, they do not deceive him in any way of deception; Al-Baghawi said: And sincerity is the opposite of deception, and it is the purification of action from the impurities of corruption. By this speech, she almost indicated that the one implied is his mother, so they doubted her words and she excused herself by saying that they do this as a means of drawing closer to [the king] and as a means of affection towards him, being strengthened by him. So they thought that. And this and similar matters are a clarification from Allah, the Exalted, that no one in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Him, glorified and exalted is He, so it is not correct for anyone else to be a god.
