Commentary
Until when they come, that is, to the place which Allah intended for their rebuke. The King of kings said to them, without manifesting to them the certainty of what He knows of their conditions, in their obstinacy and misguidance. Rather, He is asking them, showing justice by obliging them with what they acknowledge of themselves. In this, there is denial, reproach, rebuke, and scolding: "Did you deny My signs?" That is, O ignorant ones, "with what they have of greatness in themselves, and by bringing them to you through the hands of My most honorable servants." And the situation is that you did not encompass them with knowledge, that is, without thought or consideration that leads to encompassing them in their meanings and what they were revealed for, until you know what you deserve and what is fitting for you, with a proof that there is no doubt in it. "Or what were you doing in those times with what is for you like the innate dispositions?" Did you believe in them or deny them after encompassing the knowledge of them? Inform me about all of that! What has befallen you that you did not engage in this important work? For this, by My might, is the station of justice and liberation, and nothing should be left in it, not even a tiny seed or a small dot, nor is there any injustice in it against anyone, whether great or small, little or much. And the questioning in this manner is a reminder of the necessity to affirm or acknowledge the invalidation. For if they say: We denied, then if they say that without encompassing knowledge, it is clear in the invalidation. And if they say that with encompassing knowledge, it would be the greatest lie.
