And when the action of the beast is to distinguish between the believer and the disbeliever by that which they cannot repel, it follows with the distinction of each group from the other, gathering them on the Day of Resurrection in one place, and driving them without mixing with the other group. He said, adding to the worker in 'And when the saying occurs': ﴿And the Day We gather﴾ meaning: We gather - by that which we have of greatness - in a manner of compulsion; Abu Hayyan said: the gathering is the collection (p-218) with force ﴿from every nation a group﴾ meaning: a large assembly ﴿of those who deny﴾ meaning: [they bring denial to the guides] continuously, [disregarding] ﴿Our signs﴾ meaning: the visible ones by not considering them, and the audible ones by rejecting them and attacking them despite their greatness by being attributed to us; and he indicated their multitude by saying [causing from the worker in the context of: they will be in great humiliation:] ﴿So they will be driven﴾ meaning: they will be restrained with the slightest indication [from Him], the first of them upon the last of them, and their edges upon their centers, so that they may catch up, and no one among them will stray, and they will remain like that.
