Commentary

And when he finished from their great admonition with his consolation ﷺ regarding their matter and concluded with Islam, he turned to mention what they are promised of what they hastened for in mockery of it. He began with the creature that distinguishes the Muslim from others. He said, confirming with the tool of confirmation: "And when the saying occurs," meaning: the time of the occurrence of the threat, which is the meaning of the saying. It is as if, due to its greatness, there is no saying other than it. "Upon them" some of it is by coming truly and some of it is very near. "We will bring forth" [meaning:] by what we have of greatness "for them" from the signs of the Hour "a creature" and what a creature it is in its awe and greatness in creation and character "from the earth" meaning: the land of Mecca, which is the mother of the earth, because there remains after sending the most complete of creation with the highest of books except the unveiling of the veil.

And when the expression by the creature implies that it is like the mute animals that have no speech, he said: ﴿It will speak to them﴾ meaning: with words they understand. Al-Baghawi narrated through Muslim from Abdullah ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with them, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, say: "The first of the signs to emerge is the rising of the sun from its setting place, and the emergence of the creature upon the people in the morning. Whichever of the two occurs first, the other will follow closely behind it." And through Ibn Khuzaymah from Abu Shurayh al-Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The creature will have three appearances over time. It will emerge from the furthest part of Yemen, and its mention will spread among the Bedouins, and its mention will not enter the village - meaning Mecca. Then it will remain for a long time, then it will emerge again [close] to Mecca, and its mention will spread among the Bedouins, and its mention will enter the village. Then while the people are one day in the greatest of the mosques, honoring Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, and the most honored of them to Allah, the Exalted and Majestic - meaning the Sacred Mosque - they will be startled only by it approaching the mosque, drawing closer and closer - thus said Amr - meaning Ibn Muhammad al-Abqarī, one of the narrators of the hadith, between the Black Corner and the door of Banu Makhzum on the right side of the exit in the middle of that. So the people dispersed from it, and a group remained who knew that they would not be able to overpower Allah. Then it emerged upon them, shaking its head from the dust, and it passed by them, shining upon their faces until it left them as if they were the shining stars. Then it turned in the land, and no seeker could catch it, nor could any fleeing person escape it, to the extent that a man would stand and seek refuge from it by praying, and it would come to him from behind and say: O so-and-so! Now you pray. So he would turn towards it with his face, and it would mark him on his face. Then the people would dwell in their abodes, and they would travel together, and they would share in their wealth. The disbeliever would be known from the believer, and it would be said to the believer: O believer, and it would be said to the disbeliever: O disbeliever." And through Imam Ahmad from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The creature will emerge with the staff of Musa and the ring of Sulayman, peace be upon them. It will illuminate the face of the believer with the staff, and it will pierce the nose of the disbeliever with the ring, until the people of the table will gather and one will say: This is a believer, and this is a disbeliever."

Then He, glorified and exalted is He, explained His bringing her out by His saying: "Indeed, the people" meaning: by what they are, people who have not reached the first stages of faith, which is the age of those who have believed. Rather, they are confused, wavering, and indecisive at times. And at times, they were, meaning: [being] for them like a natural disposition. "By Our signs" meaning: the visible signs that We have inscribed with Our greatness in the essences of the worlds, and the audible recitations that We brought to them through the tongues of the most complete of creation: the prophets and messengers, until We sealed them with their leader who is the most complete of the worlds, to cut off their arguments and to repel their obstinacy. Therefore, We generalized His message and made it obligatory upon all intellects to follow him. "They do not have certainty" from certainty, which is the mastery of knowledge by negating doubts. Rather, they are in it shaken. So, after him, blessings and peace be upon him, there remains only the unveiling of what is not of the nature of humanity by that which their minds cannot comprehend.
