Commentary
﴿So when it came to it﴾ meaning: that which he thought was fire.
And when the statement comes after the ambiguity, it is greater, for it contains excitement and preparation for understanding. His saying: ﴿It was called﴾ is built for the object, meaning: by Allah, the Most High.
And when the one being called was ambiguous, the souls longed for its clarification. The clarification by indication was greater due to the direction of the soul towards inference. He [glorified and exalted is He] alerted to it by making the speech in the manner of the speech of the able ones, informing that He is the Most High King. So He said, building for the object, [coming] with the tool of interpretation, for the call means the saying: (p-132) ﴿Blessed is﴾ meaning: established a confirmation from it of growth, purity, and all good things that cannot be described. ﴿Who is in the fire﴾ meaning: its place, or its request, which is a request in the meaning of supplication. The expression indicates that the tree was large and that when he approached it, the fire retreated from some of its sides [so it followed it. When he reached the middle of the valley, the light surrounded him]. And the light was called fire according to what was in the belief of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him. [And Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: Rather, it was fire as Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, saw.] And the fire is one of the veils of Allah, as in the hadith: "His veil is fire; if He were to uncover it, the brightness of His face would burn whatever His sight reached of His creation." ﴿And those around it﴾ from all the angels, blessings be upon them, and those holy lands [as Allah intended at that time and otherwise]. And it is rightful for those lands to be thus because they are the birthplace of the prophets, blessings and peace be upon them, and the descent of revelation upon them, and their sustenance in life and death.
And when the call came to him - as it was reported - from all directions, he heard it with all his senses. He commanded glorification, affirming a matter from His matters, glorified and exalted is He, and confirming it. So he said, adding to what the context guided him to estimate, like: So give glad tidings of this great glad tidings: ﴿And glorified is Allah﴾ meaning: and glorify the King who has absolute perfection, a glorification that befits His majesty. And it is permissible that it be a report added to "Blessed is" [meaning:] and Allah, glorified is He, is free from anything that would be unbefitting to Him in the place of the call or elsewhere.
And when the attachment of that to the proper name indicates that He deserves that for the mere essence of Himself, which encompasses all attributes of perfection, from majesty and beauty, and He described Him with what is known that He also deserves it for His actions with every creature, of which He intends to raise Musa, blessings and peace be upon him, as great after He raised him as small. So He said: ﴿Lord of the worlds﴾.
