Commentary
So he responded to them with this narrow answer by the answer of the vast and capable One, who is not afflicted by constriction, nor does haste affect Him. He indicated readiness for defense or submission to the One of Glory and Honor, as Bilqis did, may Allah be pleased with her. He said addressing the head who cannot attain this proper conduct except by another: "Say," O Muhammad, "perhaps it is possible that there may be a follower, meaning: one who follows closely until he becomes like a follower and catches up.
And when the action was limited and contained the meaning of what is transitive with the preposition 'lam' for the sake of specification, he said: "For you," meaning: specifically for you, "some of what you hasten for," the coming of it from the warning. So you request its hastening before the time which Allah has set for it. So, regarding the estimation of its occurrence, what have you prepared for its defense? For indeed, the wise one is the one who looks into the consequences of his affairs and builds them upon the worst of estimations. Thus, he prepares for what he imagines of calamity that which will be in it salvation, as Bilqis did, may Allah be pleased with her, from the submission that necessitated safety for what she overwhelmingly thought that refusal would lead to humiliation, not as the people of Salih did from the wells, which contributed to destruction, and others among the tyrants.
