Commentary
And when the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was overwhelmed with grief for their harshness and their blindness to the path, which the evidence has guided to, that which only Allah knows, He said: "And do not grieve for them" meaning: for their lack of faith.
And when they did not limit themselves to denial, but sought to bring harm to the believers and set traps for them, He said: "And do not be" affirming the نūn because it is in the context of informing about their obstinacy and mockery, along with His sufficiency, glorified and exalted is He, for their plotting against them of the evil punishment in both abodes. Therefore, there is no need for restraint in brevity and clarity in negating distress. [The affirmation of the نūn implies firmness, so it should not be forbidden from that which hardship does not cease from, as indicated by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "And certainly We know that your heart is distressed by what they say" [Al-Hijr: 97]. And He only forbids continuing with it in remembrance.] Unlike what has passed in the context of the honey, for the context there is for justice in punishment for what occurred from the calamity in the Battle of Uhud, necessitating the magnification of consolation by urging patience, and negating [all] distress so that this would be a deterrent from exceeding the limit, rather it would lead to forgiveness. "In distress" meaning: in the heart, "from that which they plot" for indeed Allah is making their destruction in their plotting like the tyrants of the people of Salih.
