(p-207) And when there remained after this, that which he established from the signs of the power over everything in general, and over resurrection in particular, a statement that repels from misguidance except the threat of punishment, their words were a cause of distress and anguish for the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, that only Allah, the Most High, knows. He, glorified and exalted is He, said, instructing him and guiding them in the form of a threat: ﴿Say, 'Travel through the earth'﴾ meaning: O you who are obstinate or blind and ignorant. And when the intention was to seek guidance for belief, and to return from misguidance and obstinacy, due to the context being for that, not merely the threat, He said: ﴿So observe﴾ with the 'fa' indicating haste. He magnified the command to observe by making it worthy of attention and inquiry, saying: ﴿How was﴾ meaning: its state [is] at the utmost possibility ﴿the end of the criminals﴾ meaning: those who sever what Allah has commanded to be connected, from the prayer which is the connection between Allah and His servants, and the zakah which is a connection between some of the servants and others, for their denial of the messengers who are the guides to what the minds cannot independently grasp. They denied the Hereafter, which produces belief in it every guidance, and disbelief in it begets every blindness - as has been previously indicated in the opening of the surah. For if you observe their dwellings, and contemplate their news, with true contemplation, that would hasten you to belief, and you would be saved; otherwise, you would perish, and you would harm none but yourselves.
