Commentary
Then they established the proof in their claim regarding that, saying as an explanation for their rejection: "Indeed, we have been promised."
And when the focus in this surah is on the certainty of the Hereafter, He preceded His saying: "This" meaning: the resurrection from the graves as we were the first time - according to His saying: "We and our forefathers" - unlike what has preceded in the surah of the Believers. And they said: "Previously" as an addition to their rejection, meaning: that many ages have passed regarding this promise, and nothing has occurred from it. Therefore, this is a proof that there is no reality to it. So it is as if it was said: What is meant by it? They said: "Indeed," meaning: what "this is nothing but the legends of the ancients," meaning: what they have written falsely regarding a matter whose intent we do not know. And there is no truth to its meaning. Their words have diminished as you see, to the extent that they are sometimes in a state of utmost denial, the habit of the knowledgeable, and sometimes they reject the habit of the doubter, the compounded ignorance, worthy of mockery, as has been mentioned that it is the meaning of the contradictions - and Allah is the Grantor of success.
