Commentary
And when he finished with the verse in which the two realms share, he mentioned what the earth is unique in. This is because it is closer to them, and they know its reality and what is besides it from its conditions better than they know the heavenly matters. This is to enumerate the proofs indicating His uniqueness in the action that indicates His uniqueness in divinity. He said, substituting from ﴿Is there anyone who created﴾ [An-Naml: 60] ﴿Is there anyone﴾ meaning: Or did the one who ﴿made the earth a resting place﴾ mean: stable in itself so that it can support others upon it? The reasoning would necessitate that it be a pit or unstable, just as what is suspended in the air is unstable.
And when he mentioned its stability, he followed it with his proof in the context of gratitude, saying: ﴿And He made within it﴾ meaning: in the open spaces between its mountains ﴿rivers﴾ meaning: flowing in a single state. If the earth were to be disturbed even slightly, the courses of the waters would certainly change without doubt.
And when he mentioned the proof, he mentioned the reason for the stability, saying: ﴿And He made for it anchors﴾ meaning: like the anchors of ships. These were causes for its stability on a balance that He, glorified and exalted is He, arranged in places throughout it so that all its sides are balanced, preventing it from being disturbed.
And when he established the stability and its cause, and He, glorified and exalted is He, had made for the rivers paths that they flow through, if something were to prevent them from flowing, they would almost overflow, causing most of the earth to be of no benefit in movement or vegetation, or that the barrier would break due to its flowing power and the strength of its penetration with the gentleness of its flow. This is because it is customary for waters to permeate between the layers of soil and to infiltrate with their gentleness and lightness, and the weight in the depths, even if just a little. And He, glorified and exalted is He, had blocked what is between the two seas: the Roman and the Persian. What is between them from the land is indeed very little in some places. Some of the waters of the earth are sweet, and some are salty, very close to that sweet water. He asked them - to alert them to His great power - about the one who restrains the aggression of one of them against the other, and the aggression of each of the salty seas against what is between them so that they do not break through and connect. He said: ﴿And He made between the two seas a barrier﴾ meaning: preventing one from reaching the other.
And when it is known that it is Allah alone, there is no doubt in that for a rational person, He repeated the denial in His saying: ﴿Is there a god with Allah﴾ meaning: encompassing in knowledge and power. And since the true answer is certainly: no, and He had established for them in the first denial knowledge in terms of judgment on the whole, and each of them claims superiority in intellect, clarity of thought, and firmness in knowledge regarding what the Arabs claim. He said: ﴿Rather, most of them﴾ meaning: the creation who benefit from these benefits ﴿do not know﴾ meaning: they have no type of knowledge, but they are like cattle for their turning away from this clear proof.
