"And they were righteous" meaning: they were characterized by righteousness as if they were created upon it. They would place between themselves and that which angers their Lord a protection from righteous deeds and profitable trades. And likewise, We do with everyone who does their deeds. It is said: they were four thousand, whom Salih, blessings be upon him, took to Hadramawt. When they entered it, Salih, blessings be upon him, died, and it was named after that.
