Commentary

And when it was known from this ambiguity the severity of the matter, He, glorified and exalted is He, caused an increase in its severity by His saying: ﴿So look﴾. And He increased its greatness by indicating with the tool of questioning that He is worthy of being asked about it, saying: ﴿How was the end of their plot?﴾ For indeed, that is Our tradition regarding similar cases. Then He began anew to increase the severity by His saying, clarifying what was ambiguous: ﴿Indeed, We﴾ meaning: by what We have of greatness. And whoever opens, it is a substitute for him from ﴿the end of﴾ ﴿We destroyed them﴾ meaning: We caused them to perish, meaning: the nine who divided, by Our greatness which has no equal ﴿and their people altogether﴾. Not a single informant escaped from them, nor was there any distinction in that between one who advances and one who retreats. And where could anyone among them or among others go from Our grasp or flee from Our kingdom?
