Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, completed this story, which is based on knowledge built with wisdom, indicating that those called in it have agreed to submit to enter into Islam, along with the majesty of kingship and the leadership of honor, and the oppression by the hand of one who is a stranger to them and far from them, He followed it with a story in which its people were divided into two groups with humiliation and poverty. Despite the fact that the caller among them does not lose any honor by following him, along with what is in it of wisdom and the display of precise knowledge by nullifying the plots, after a long patience and forbearance, He, the Most High, said, opening with a letter of expectation and affirmation for those who thought that this is the case for every messenger with whom he calls them, adding to it: "And We certainly gave David" [An-Naml: 15] "And We certainly sent" meaning: with what We have of greatness "to Thamud". Then He pointed to the amazement of their hesitation by saying: "Their brother Salih". He combined good action with a good name and close kinship. Then He mentioned the purpose of the message with what is more just and better than it, which is the acknowledgment of the truth for its people. He said: "That you should worship Allah" meaning: the greatest king [who has no equal], alone, and do not associate anything with Him, especially something that does not harm in any way nor benefit, clarifying that the messengers, blessings and peace be upon them, agree on this, whether they are Arabs or non-Arabs. Then He increased in amazement at them with what the conjunction and the tool of surprise indicated from the initiative to separate with what calls for gathering, saying: "So when they are" meaning: Thamud "two groups". Then He clarified by saying: "They dispute" that it is a division of disbelief and faith, not a gathering in guidance and knowledge. Some of them believed Salih and followed him as mentioned in Al-A'raf. Here comes the reference to him by saying: "And those with you" [An-Naml: 47], and some of them continued in their polytheism and lies, and each group says: I am on the truth and my opponent is on falsehood.
