"What" means: the object of worship that "was" meaning: a firm existence in the past time, "she worshipped" meaning: a beginning worship "other than Allah" meaning: not the Sovereign, the Most High, who has all perfection or a lower rank than His rank. This is the worship of the sun, so that the difference may appear between the party of Allah, the Wise, the Knowing, and the party of Iblis, the foolish, the ignorant. Then he explained that by referring to the great blessing of Allah upon him and the blessing upon his ancestors by saying: "Indeed, it was read with the opening as a substitute for the subject of 'turned away.'" "She was from a people" meaning: of those who are strong and established, "disbelievers" meaning: so that was a reason - even if she was in the utmost of intellect and clarity of mind and acceptance of knowledge, as indicated by her assumption regarding her throne, which no one is guided to except one who has the capacity for guidance - in her following their traces in religion. Thus, the mirror of her thought was turned away, and the swords of her intellect grew.
