Commentary
And when the closest people of that time to Allah were in service, he was astonished by their turning away from Allah. He said, expressing his amazement: "I found her and her people," meaning: all of them are in great misguidance. This is because they "prostrate to the sun," beginning that "without Allah," meaning: [someone] of a lower rank than the rank of the Greatest King, who has no equal. This is the rank of actions, as they are created from His creations, glorified and exalted is He, whether that is with independence or associating partners. "And the devil adorned for them their deeds," meaning: these ugly ones, until they began to think of them as good.
And when it resulted in their being blinded from the path of truth, he said: "So he turned them away from the path," meaning: the one to which there is no path to Allah other than it, and it is that by which He sent His prophets and messengers, blessings and peace be upon them.
And when their misguidance resulted from that, he said: "So they are," meaning: in such a way that "they do not find guidance," meaning: there is no guidance for them, rather they are in pure misguidance and complete blindness.
