وَحُشِرَ لِسُلَيۡمَٰنَ جُنُودُهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِ وَٱلطَّيۡرِ فَهُمۡ يُوزَعُونَ ١٧ ﴿17
17And mustered for Sulaimān were his forces from among the Jinns and the humans and the birds. So all of them were kept under (his) control,

Commentary

And when this was merely a report, he followed it with what confirms it, saying: ﴿And gathered﴾ meaning: gathered together certainly by force and might and coercion with the least effort ﴿for Solomon, his troops﴾.

And when this indicated his greatness, he increased the indication of it by saying: ﴿from the jinn﴾ he began with them due to the difficulty of gathering them ﴿and mankind﴾ he mentioned them second due to their nobility and their participation with them in that, in terms of the distance of their aims and the separation of their intentions.

And when he mentioned what has understanding and began with it due to its nobility, he followed it with what does not have understanding, saying: ﴿and the birds﴾. And when the gathering means gathering by force, it would not be free from dispersion. And the estimation was: and he marched with them in some of the battles, which caused his saying, in glorification of the army and its leader: ﴿So they are arranged﴾ meaning: they are held back by an army, the first of them upon the last of them with the least matter and the easiest, so that they may catch up, and that would be more deserving of awe, and more supportive of victory, and closer to safety; from Qatadah that there was upon every type of his troops a restraint that would return the first of them to the last of them so that they would not advance in the march, he said: and the restrainer is the one who holds back and it is the overseer. And the origin of restraint is stopping and preventing.
