Commentary
And when the decree was: 'Do all that I command you, for it is inevitable, and do not fear anything, for nothing will reach you with harm, as it is perfected by the law of wisdom, protected by the walls of honor,' this was indicated by the conjunction in His saying: ﴿And throw down your staff﴾, meaning: so that you may know with witnessing knowledge My might and wisdom - or it is conjoined to ﴿Indeed, it was blessed﴾ [An-Naml: 8] - so he threw it as he was commanded, and it immediately became - by what the 'fa' permitted - a great serpent indeed, which - despite being of immense size - was at the utmost lightness and swiftness in its writhing when it attempted what it desired. ﴿So when he saw it moving﴾, meaning: writhing [in its movement] while being of great size, ﴿It was as if it were a jinn﴾, meaning: a small serpent in its lightness and swiftness, and this does not contradict the greatness of its body. ﴿He fled﴾, meaning: Musa, blessings and peace be upon him.
And when the turning away was shared among meanings, the intended meaning was clarified by His saying: ﴿Turning away﴾, meaning: he turned away fleeing from it, moving very quickly due to His saying: ﴿And he did not look back﴾, meaning: he did not return on his heels, nor did he hesitate in earnestness in fleeing, and he did not glance back after his turning away. It is said: 'He followed up on him with taqib', meaning: he returned, and he followed up in the matter with taqib: he hesitated in pursuing it earnestly. This is in the arrangement of the precise. In the dictionary, taqib means: (p-135) looking back. And Al-Qazzaz said in his poetry: 'He followed up if he turned back, so he is a mu'aqib.'
And when the soul longed for what was said to him at this state, it was answered that it was said to him: ﴿O Musa, do not fear﴾. Then this prohibition was justified by His saying, giving good news of safety and the message: ﴿Indeed, those who are sent do not fear with Me﴾, meaning: [in] the place that is among the wonders of the disruptions of customs, which is the time of revelation and its place. ﴿The messengers﴾, meaning: because they are protected from wrongdoing, and no one fears from the just king except the wrongdoer.
