Commentary
And when the righteous may not have their deeds apparent, and the manifestation of Allah for them is a means for supplication and an increase in reward, he said: ﴿And grant me a tongue of truth﴾ meaning: a beautiful mention, a general acceptance, and a good praise, for what You have manifested from me of good qualities ﴿among those who come later﴾ meaning: the people who will exist after me until the Day of Judgment, so that I may be an imam for the righteous, and I may have a share of their rewards. For indeed, 'whoever initiates a good practice will have its reward and the reward of whoever acts upon it until the Day of Resurrection.' And this was a response from Allah, glorified and exalted is He, to his supplication. Among the greatest of it is that Allah made him a blessed tree from which the prophets were branched, by whom He revived them, upon whom be peace and blessings, His mention which among the greatest of it was on the tongue of the greatest of them, the unlettered Prophet ﷺ, from his saying: 'Send blessings upon Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim.' Until the end of it.
